Dr Maaike Kusters is a Consultant Paediatric Immunologist at Great Ormond Street Hospital (GOSH) since 2018, where she specializes in caring for children with complex inborn errors of immunity. She serves as Honorary Associate Professor at UCL Institute of Child Health and Innovation Officer at DRIVE Innovation Unit, GOSH. As elected Treasurer of the European Society for Primary Immunodeficiencies (ESID) 2024-2028, she maintains vital connections within the global immunodeficiency community.

Dr Kusters leads GOSH’s specialized syndromic immunodeficiency clinic, managing conditions including Kabuki Syndrome, Down syndrome, and VICI syndrome. Her expertise encompasses comprehensive diagnostic evaluation, advanced treatment coordination including gene therapy and transplantation programmes, with particular interest in immune dysregulation (e.g. STAT pathways) and Griscelli Type 2 syndrome.

A pioneer in healthcare innovation, Dr Kusters develops AI applications and ambient voice technology to enhance diagnostic accuracy while reducing administrative burden in clinical practice. Her research focuses on data-driven solutions for improved patient safety and treatment optimization in paediatric immunology.

Trained in the Netherlands (Radboud University Nijmegen MD, Leiden University PhD – Adaptive immune system in Down Syndrome), she recently received the 2024 Consultant of the Year Award from GOSH Division Blood Cells Cancer.
