He received his MD, PhD and had his training in Paediatrics and in Paediatric Rheumatology in Italy. After spending 2 years at the NIH, he worked in Pavia, Italy, at the Department of Paediatrics. Since 2003 he is at the Bambino Gesù Children Hospital in Rome, where he serves as Head of the Division of Paediatric Rheumatology, of the Laboratory of ImmunoRheumatology and of the Research Department of Immunology.
His clinical activity is focused on management of paediatric rheumatic diseases. Since his first publication on interleukin-6 in sJIA in 1991, his main clinical and research interest have been Still’s disease and MAS, focusing on pathogenesis and biomarkers. This research led Dr De Benedetti to design and lead, as international principal investigator, pivotal registration trials. He has been or is the leader of 12 phase II and III trials with innovative targeted therapies.
